How about going as Marvin the Martian? He's my fav! You can wear a red turtleneck and tights, with a green skirt. You would just need the end of a bristle broom to attach to a green hat and you're all set :)

how about a jack in the box? seriously was the best costumei ever did. get a box...paint it with the bright colors like a real jack in the box, but cut one side to go behind your head like its the top. get some colorfull ribbon to place over each shoulder to hold the box up. wear a white shirt...plus do crazy over the top makeup.

or see if your friends could all do one big costume  like the flintstones or scooby doo. or do all the different barbies- scuba barbie, baywach barbie, princess barbie.

It's our national heritage (south africa), we celebrate the day thousands of women marched to the union building (aka white house) with a freedom chart, where they had a list of laws they wanted changed esp pertaining to women. We now have a public holiday to celebrate that. you really just do whatever you like. There are usually shows/bashes, like now, kc and jojo and keith sweat are in the country.
